PENSACOLA, Fla. (WALA) - For the first time, you can fly United Airlines out of Pensacola.
Thursday, the first United flight flew out of the Pensacola Regional Airport.
The Norfleet family, who is from Maine, was on board the flight. Kate Norfleet said they chose the flight because of the price and convenience.
"The one thing we realized is that from Maine to Florida, Pensacola at least, you can't get there from here, and now we can. And it was really just easy and the cheapest fight for us," Norfleet said.
Airport Director Melinda Crawford said Pensacola Regional is expanding in a lot of ways, and the city has been working to make United Airlines a part of the family for a long time.
"The mayor tells me he has been in discussions with United for the last 14 years, trying to recruit them to the Pensacola Regional Gulf Coast Airport, so it's been a long process, but it's worth it," Crawford said.
Martin Kammerman, from United Airlines, said passengers will have a lot of choices.
"They're going to have two non-stops a day to Washington D.C. Well that's great in itself, but there's also 99 places we fly to out of Washington D.C. They can connect to Europe, to the northeast, to the West Coast, and Chicago," Kammerman said.
United is also offering round-trip weekend flights to Chicago during the Spring and early Summer.
"I'm glad they're here. Hopefully they'll stick around, hopefully they'll fill up the planes and I just like having other options," passenger Scott Duncan said.
United planes flying into and out of Pensacola hold 50 passengers.
United representatives say if the Spring and Summer flights to Chicago start booking up, they will consider expanding the service.
