Every now and then you experience something that changes you. For Ryan and I, food is usually involved. Tonight it happened.
We have walked and run past this small restaurant every day. Each time Ryan has said we need to eat there. Something just spoke to him. Tonight it happened.
We were out walking, asked the waiter who was standing outside smoking, what time they opened. We came back ten minutes after they opened. We were the only ones in this small restaurant that sat perhaps thirty people. By the time we left it was full.
The waiter, we soon learned, was born in Egypt, turned Canadian, turned Italian wasn't a big fan of working on Venezia and was planning on moving back to Egypt once things settled down. He had a dry sense of humor and we hit it off immediately. We loved him. He served the first dish to us saying "now, you will love me!" It was perfect.
About the food. He asked us if we liked fish, we said yes, and he ordered for us. House specialty, flounder, capers, olives, potatoes. Amazing. Our dinner started off with the house welcome appetizer of polenta with fish paste (we can’t remember what it is actually called, but it is delicious and we know ‘fish paste’ doesn’t even do it justice!). This was simply divine. He ordered our appetizer as well, an Adriatic shrimp sampling (4 different shrimps, 1 squid, and then the famous fish paste).
We enjoyed our meal with a great bottle of
white wine, a chardonnay and pinot grigio combination. He ordered our dessert as well. An amazing night all around. Pure Italian Perfection.
